Political Crisis in Venezuela: What Happens Next?

The political crisis in Venezuela has become one of the most complex issues attracting world attention. First, the country was hit by a collapsing economy, with inflation reaching unimaginable figures. This crisis not only has an impact on the economic sector, but also affects social, health and political aspects. Communities face shortages of food, medicine, and other basic needs, resulting in mass migration to neighboring countries. One of the main causes of the crisis is the government of Nicolás Maduro, which is considered authoritarian. It diverts state resources for the benefit of political and military elites, while the people suffer. Elections held in 2018 were accused by many observers of being fraudulent, and Maduro later claimed victory, increasing political tensions domestically and internationally. The loss of support from society and the humanitarian crisis have brought General Maduro to a critical point. In early 2019, Juan Guaidó, the opposition leader, declared himself interim president. Guaidó has received international support, including from the US and Latin American countries, but the situation in Venezuela has not improved. The government’s crackdown on protest demonstrations has only worsened the situation. In this context, a diplomatic solution appears increasingly difficult to achieve. Several negotiations to resolve the crisis have failed, and tensions between Maduro’s supporters and opponents remain high. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s economy is suffering from various sanctions, especially from western countries who want to pressure Maduro’s government. Based on UN reports, the domestic humanitarian situation is deteriorating with more than 5 million Venezuelans fleeing to other countries. The emergence of criminal groups at the border is also a challenge, with increasing illicit trafficking and human rights violations. In the future, there are several scenarios that may occur. If Maduro’s government continues in power, the situation will likely remain stagnant, with more Venezuelans becoming more desperate. On the other hand, if Guaidó and the opposition succeed in gaining greater international support, significant changes could be in store. The potential for military intervention from outside countries is also a consideration, although this could trigger further conflict. In various projections, it is important for the international community to be actively involved in finding sustainable solutions. Supporting dialogue between the government and the opposition, as well as providing direct humanitarian assistance, are steps to consider. Only with a patient and wise approach can a way out of the political crisis in Venezuela be found. It is the duty of the global community to observe and contribute to the transformation that the Venezuelan people desire, for the well-being and recovery of a country that has been mired in a long series of difficulties.
